Filming at the Bernat Klein Studio

There are some filming projects where the location is more than just a backdrop.

The Bernat Klein Studio in the Scottish Borders is one of them.

I recently spent time at the studio filming content connected to the work and legacy of Bernat Klein, working with the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust to help tell the story of this remarkable place and the people behind it.

For me, projects like this are about much more than simply pointing a camera at something.

It’s about understanding the story first, then working out how best to capture it.

That means looking for the details that might otherwise be missed — the textures, materials, objects, spaces and small moments that help bring a place and its history to life.

Alongside the more considered shots, I also filmed pieces directly to camera and captured plenty of footage that can be shaped and used within the finished film.

This is the part of filmmaking I really enjoy: being immersed in a subject, finding the visual language for the story and then bringing all of those elements together in the edit.

The final film will tell a much bigger story, but this gives you a little insight into what goes on behind the scenes.
